Week 5 - Food and some theatre plus a garden and a church

This post is largely about food and I am largely okay with that.

I must first mention the beautiful Italian gardens that now have running water (at the beginning of the trip they did not). I should also mention that I came across these in Hyde Park during my run, because I do try to exercise to keep up with all of this eating.

This brunch I made for myself was inspired by a brunch Mom and I had in France. They had a little bit of everything for brunch and it was delightful.

I love love love love dark chocolate and there is a chocolate shop near Borough Market (which has been around as a market since the 12th cent.) called Rabot 1745 that is divine. You can get 70%, 85% and 100% hot chocolate. This is the 70%.

I purchased this bread from a bakery in Borough and I might take a break right now to go have another slice. It's brown sourdough. . . Yep, I just had another slice.

Southwark Cathedral  - near Borough Market

This cathedral is SO old. They had the effigy of a knight dating back to 1280. 1280. That is so long ago. We weren't supposed to take pictures on the inside - I will tell you that there was this couple touring it because they are going to get married here. They were adorable; I kept picturing her in her dress and the flowers . . . etc. I'm sure it will be a beautiful wedding. :)

Thursday night was saw An Ideal Husband - I love Oscar Wilde. I love seeing an Oscar Wilde play in London. The wit makes my heart happy.

Friday, we saw Hamlet  at The Globe. Honestly, it wasn't my favorite. We also got to tour The Globe and I am obsessed with this costume:

It's for Queen Elizabeth; and because they wanted to make it as authentic as possible it has to be pinned on to the actress which took 90 minutes!!! Every time!! You can see the dress on her here. Her makeup and hair also took 90 minutes, so this actress had a 3 hr prep.

We went to this BBQ restaurant near The Globe. Growing up in the south, it's super fun to have BBQ in London. The restaurant is inspired by Memphis, which is  2 1/2 hours from where I'm from. So cool. I got a vegan burger and it is probably the best one I've ever had and I've had a lot of vegan burgers. They have this dessert called "Banoffee" - it's vanilla ice cream, toffee caramel sauce, banana, and Oreos. It surprisingly wasn't too sweet and I don't think it would be that hard to recreate.

Daniel and I went back to Rabot 1745, because I can't control myself. I got the 85% this time AND they turn from a cafe to a bar at night, so we got ALL of their bar snacks. We explain it in this video:

We ended the night with a show at the Arcola Theatre called Not Talking. It shared a powerful message about how the problems in life often become exceptionally more painful because we won't talk about them. It's not necessarily the event that hurts you, it's how you react to it. Talking helps us help other people.

Grateful for theatre,

Rebecca
